Here is where my family room started, almost two years ago. Hubby painted two of the walls a dark, suede brown to make the room feel more cozy {Shh, I'm waiting for him to leave town to paint them white again}.
We bought our brown leather sofa and chair at Z Gallery six years ago {pre-child} hoping that sturdy leather would outlast a child...well this set still looks almost brand new so it's not going anywhere anytime soon. The rest of our decor was/is dark with a lot of iron and dark woods.
You can see all of the gold accents in room {candles, lamp shades, artwork etc} which works well with the dark furniture, but I am on to white, gray, and light everything now.
My first step was to paint and distress the antique hall tree that my parents bought me years and years ago. It was banished to the garage until I gave it new life and here it stands. Next to it you see the chair that I refinished last summer and posted about here.Yes, they both stick out like a sore thumb but remember, this was just the start of the transition. Notice the white and tan linen pillow on the chair and the white ironstone bowl.
I was on a mission!
Whew, this is painful to show you, but here is the clutter. The bookcases are in hubby's office area/domain and yes, I know they could use some cleaning up, but all in due time. The fake plant (lower left corner) is now seeking refuge in the garage, the too small area rug has been replaced, the pictures have been moved around, the black bombay chest has been moved, the birdcage is no longer in the fireplace, and those wicker PB cubes have been replaced~ YAHOO! You see here I added a white birdcage and silhouettes of me and my daughter on the wall opposite the white hall tree to try to balance it. Notice the white stone pieces on the shelves framing our large painting. Here you can see my antique grain sack monogrammed pillows on the couch and the leather bench that I covered in tan muslin fabric.
AFTER:

Here is my family room today.
My new personalized large wall clock now balances the white hall tree. As you saw here, I recently found a fix for the gold beaded hanging lamp shade so most of the gold in this room is no longer. I moved the black bombay chest to the dark wall next to the dark couch so it blends much better here.
My two chairs now flank the fireplace and both have small distressed tables next to them.

Notice the new sea grass area rug. I love the way it feels, smells, and looks in this room!

Here is the view facing the fireplace. I hung the white octagonal mirror on the fireplace screen just to soften the black iron against my white linen chairs.

Here you get a better view of the side detail of my new farm style, aged elm coffee table (we found the table at High Fashion Home in Houston).

We love it! It lightens the room up quite a bit while still working with the big leather furniture and doesn't clash with the sea grass rug.
We decided that the wine tasting table wouldn't work in here due to the height and the fact that people wouldn't be able to reach it to set their drinks down. Hubby loves the pull out ends on this table and envisions our guests using them at our wine tasting event this weekend.
I love the rough texture of the table with the aged white mixed in.
Aside from cleaning up the bookshelves and painting the brown walls white again~ I'm very happy with our results.

I am in love with your room, even before you paint it white. All your touches are so light, fun, and I can see where you are going. You have such classic taste. I woke up one day about 2 years ago, and hated everything that I had done to my house in my Katrina-dazed state when we had to rebuild. I decided I needed to lighten everything also. Since we had spent too much money on everything new, I knew I had to DIY everything and it would take time. So I'm in love with all your transformations since I doing the same!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
forgot to say how much I adore your new coffee table, it's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteit all looks fab! WTG on the coffee table find~i love it soo much. it really is perfect to blend in with your space. i know how you feel when a room starts to get the look you want!
ReplyDeleteI have long been saying that I want to make it to High Fashion, and I have not done so...It def. needs to go on my to-do list! Love your transformation! So will you go white with the walls or just much lighter brown?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I'm wild for your new coffee table - High Fashion Home has some great stuff, although I'd consider their price points a little steep.
ReplyDeleteYou may not even need to convince hubster to let you paint the walls light - the contrast works beautifully!
Lovely and charming....every detail is perfect.
ReplyDeleteThe new coffee table is a great find.
I find going lighter always gives me a sense of calmness...
Now go kick some Wii bootahy!

I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the nice feedback everyone!
ReplyDeleteSouthern Inspiration- I've been wanting to paint the whole room completely white again but am now having second thoughts thanks to my readers and of course Mr Morning T. :-)
GM T, What a great transformation. It is like you opened a window and let fresh air in. Amazing. I am in love with your coffee table. Does this feel more like you, now? Enjoy all of your hard work. I like the contrast of the colored wall, maybe paint it a lighter shade of greige so it will highlight the white pieces. Thanks for sharing,Kathysue
ReplyDeleteThe changes you have made are lovely! I'm glad to see that you covered a leather bench in muslin. I have been contemplating doing the same thing, but for some reason felt guilty. Now I don't have to...besides, it's not permanent.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for visiting the other day and leaving the sweet comment. Have a great weekend.
I think this turned out fabulous!
ReplyDeleteClever Stylish changes, I like the way you expressed your style. I will be back to visit! I am new to blogging, it's so much fun! Stop and visit me sometime.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have wonderful memories in your beautiful new room!!
:-)
You have done a fabulous makeover on your family room. I can see why you spend so much time there - it's gorgeous! Leigh
ReplyDeleteThank you for your wonderful comments on my home... I love yours as well!! I just wanted to answer some of the questions you had. The green furniture piece in my entry way I did not paint, it is actually the original paint which dates back to 1780 from Provence, France. The stains I did in my home I did not do by myself. His name is Moises (Elite Painting Company) and he has a wonderful painting company... the nicest people you would ever meet. They really went the extra mile for me. From the looks of your blog, you're truly talented! I love the makeover!!! I wish you all the best!

ReplyDeleteI truly love how you slowly evolved your room without it ever looking fractured. I was recently inspired by your SLOW evolution of style and have been thinking of doing the same thing. I am starting with cream accents and drapes...and will slowly evole to. Hopefully mine will look as serene and flawless as yours.
ReplyDeleteCheers~

ReplyDeleteCongratulations to your new family room. To make it white was the right decision. Now is the room brighter and airy. The choosen colours and decorations support the chic classic taste. Good luck and many ideas for your next work and transformations.

I came back to look some more. Great transformation on the family room. And even though you did not go all white on the walls, the change in accessories definately help to lighten as you wished. Great job. I am off to find the post about the clock, I love it.
ReplyDeleteOK..so I DID get to your kitchen & it IS so cute! But then I got distracted in your family room again! Then I saw your pair of chairs & how one has the white tacks around the edge & wanted to ask you what you used & how difficult it was??? I have been attempting something similar using these little upholstery nails (little!) to nail on new fabric to my din. chairs (love the exposed nailhead look w/ the raw edges) & about gave up after it taking so long just to nail in one!!! I guess the wood is really hard. Anyway just wanted to get your thoughts!

Hi there! I came across your blog from Much To Do with Nothing. Your blog and your home are absolutely lovely! I am so glad I found you. Now, I have a question for you. Do you love your seagrass rug? I know you said that you do, but we are looking at one and I am so afraid that it will hurt our feet! I am barefoot most of the time and I am just afraid! I would love if you jumped over to my blog and left me a note. Again, you family room is yummy! You have an excellent touch!
ReplyDeleteHi Jemsmom- so glad you stopped by! I do love my seagrass rug and it is quite soft on bare feet. I wouldn't recommend sisal if you're worried about comfort, but seagrass has been great for us!

I just stumbled upon your blog ... I love it! Your new family room is beautiful! I love the brown walls with the light furniture and accessories. And I think the brown couches look great!! Wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteThis is really inspiring. I have dark wood floors and black leather couches in my living room. I was feeling like I could never get "light and white" into this room... but after seeing yours, I think there is hope! Great post!
