Faux chandie on the cheap

Would you pull something right out of your neighbors trash? I didn't have to dig, I just walked right up, picked this wrought iron chandelier right off the top of their trash pile, and carried it back to my lab garage.

What did this little transformation cost me?

$3.47~ {and a few hours of work, plus a bit of pride}.

I don't even know if this baby works or not, and truth be told I really don't care.
Initially I wanted to make a candelabra out of it, and that's likely what I'll do later.

I bought new bulbs ($3.47, the only thing I had to purchase for this little project), giving the appearance that it is a working fixture.

I hosed her off, added a few coats of paint, distressed her up a bit, and sewed a cord cover using white scrap fabric.
Added some glue and candle wax sleeve treatment along with paint and brown shoe polish (thanks for that tip Linsey!) to the bulb/candle sleeves.
I hung some gold charms that hubby gave me a few weeks ago. This was one of my inspiration chandie's from The Willows Home & Garden blog.

And voila.
This is what I started with minus the white plastic bulb/candle sleeves. I first tried a pewter faux paint treatment on it but I didn't love the results so I went with white.
While I had the sewing machine out I decided to add a center ruffle and flower to this pillow. That's it for now.

I hope your weekend was productive yet restful too!

Happy Monday~

T

  3. Good work!
We were at Urban Market this weekend. Saw a lot of stuff that looked like it was completed in the Morning T Lab!! I kept telling my mom, 'we don't need to buy that, we can make it!!'

  4. You know what they say, what is one mans trash is another mans treasure. I love what you did and it looks so pretty hanging next to your hall tree. It is like the necklace in the room. Every room needs a pretty necklace. I can't imagine them just throwing it away. It was meant to be, you had to get it and rescue it. It was your good deed for the weekend. Love the little embellishment on your pillow. Everything is looking very spiffy around your home. Happy Monday, sweet friend, Kathysue

  9. First let me say when I discovered your blog a couple of weeks ago I was jumping up and down...your home is amazing!

Now, here's a little tip to see if the chandy works (courtesy of my husband)....take one of the exposed wires from the top of the chandy and put it in an outlet (of course have a bulb in the sleeve), if the chandy works, the bulb will light up.

I'm a chandy girl myself and pick them up on the cheap (free) whenever I can. I have some extra ones in my "lab" just waiting for spray paint and of course finding a place to hang it!

  22. What a great find. Well it is great now that you found it! I am super excited about the glue part. What a great way to make the sleeves look like candles. I am gonna have to try that on the chandy above my bath. I think it will look way better then the plain sleeves. Thanks so much for sharing!

  34. Oh my gosh, you could sell that beauty for a hundred bucks or so! What a profit! Great job on the candle sleeves. I thought it was all vintage and had to go back and read again to make sure I had read it right. Yes, I definitely would have picked that up out of the trash but wouldn't have made it as beautiful as you did. I'm not that clever.

  50. Wow love your chandelier revamp! Amazing...I like it much more than the one that inspired you! But seriously! Where do you find neighbours like these?? Sadly, we don't have those 'trash on the kerb' things here in NZ..we have to bag everything up and you never get the opportunity to go thru other peoples rubbish! haha! that sounds sooo yuk! But I'd love to have the chance that many of you ladies get to pick up some awesome recycleable objets d'art!!
    good on you! it's fab!
