Over the weekend it went from this:
to this:
Before asking someone to haul this beat up old table away, I figured it would be worth some time giving the old lady a face lift in my workshop out back. ;) I wanted to get that thick paint look, similar to the finish on my faux Mora clock, Monique. I searched high and low for information on painting furniture using plaster mixed in but couldn't find anything. I went to my local hardware store and asked the paint expert about it and he told me to use this joint compound (pictured above and similar to plaster but apparently easier to work with) mixed with paint to achieve the look I was after.
I sprayed the table with Kilz primer to start.
Once the coat of primer was dry I began mixing some white, cream, and dark dray 'oops' paint (I already had on hand) together, while adding in the joint compound. The joint compound is thick and has the consistency of Greek yogurt. It was actually really fun to work with! It was quick and easy to spread and I played around with different textures (combed effect versus rag rolled versus blotted). It took a full 24 hours to dry and by that time I was too anxious to add a second coat so I sanded in spots and moved her into the family room.
I had this leftover tan and white striped linen fabric and a tension rod and voila, it's the perfect length (needs ironing, sorry!). Hubby doesn't love the fabric but I like the idea of extra {hidden}storage underneath. I would consider no fabric but with two small benches underneath for extra seating and to use the table as a work area occasionally.
The view facing into the dining room, just past the front entrance. I recently removed all of the little lamp shades on the dining room light fixture and put drip sleeves on instead. It updated the fixture a bit and the sleeves will come with me whenever we move on.
Turning and facing the back of the family room, into the sun room. You can just make out the humidor and small wine rack in the sun room, awaiting days of chatting adults sipping wine and conversing {or more likely me sipping wine alone and reading a book while escaping reality and more DIY projects- ha!}
The landing over/into the kitchen or upstairs bedrooms:
The whole room as seen from the landing. This fab designer friend made a few quick changes here a few months ago including throwing the drop cloth fabric over the leather chair {LOVE it there and so does Max}, and moving Monique to hide the cords next to the mantel.
Monique's home is just temporary until we find a cord covering solution.
The little foot stool belonged to my grandparents. She was a recipient of the Morning T face lift treatment this weekend as well.
My how far we've come. Not so long ago this was my family room decor, chocolate with touches of gold. You can read the post about the transition to neutrals and white here.
Aside from the leather couch and chair, most of these pieces are long gone!
Here's a view of the desk from a few years back. Oh the clutter on the desk, around the desk, inside the book cases, ugh. I did purge and edit the bookcases back in November but they're a constant project.
THEN:
NOW:
**UPDATE- I slapped another coat of the paint/compound mixture onto the table yesterday evening to add a bit more depth. Here's a close up of the texture.
Now I need your help. Do you like the table better with the skirt/fabric?
Or do you like it better without?
I'm still contemplating this Italian script on the table. If only I had better handwriting.... Image via MyNottingHill blog.
OK, thoughts anyone? Should I ditch the skirt altogether or change to a solid tan linen? Ditch the paint and attempt the Italian script? Is the table too blue? I was going for a light gray but it looks blue in these photos. Please share any ideas with me, I'd love to hear what you think.
Ciao~
T

The table looks great. I like it both ways but think I like it best without the skirt. Maybe you could get some large french looking greyish baskets to put underneath for storage?
ReplyDeleteThe transformation of your living space is amazing. Love all the white touches and open space.
I think the room looks absolutely stunning with all the changes you've made. Beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteI prefer the table with the skirt -I think it finishes the whole thing off beautifully and of course can keep clutter out of sight.
~Sam
I like it all...great job. Big fan of the italian script, ditch the curtain...baskets will hold a lot of stuff!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I am speechless! You rocked that table girl.....I like skirt with and without...although I am thinking some large baskets under would be some nice texture also. First time here.....
ReplyDeletewell...I've read the other comments..and it seems we're not really helping you a bit....
ReplyDeleteand I'm afraid I can't offer much more....
love the idea of the table without the skirt and with the large baskets..
but I'm also a southern girl...
and we LOVE fabric! :) SO, if you keep the skirt on the table...it looks amazing!!! :)
with skirt...the space looks warm...
without the skirt...the space will look clear an clean.
you did better than fabulous on the table...WAY TO GO!!!!
seriously. it looks like a professional did it.
love the room....your transformation is unbelievable.
...love the wood floors..love the white..love the burlap...love the bookshelves....love the plantation shutters...
love monique.
Send some of your energy this way...I've been in a real decorating slump lately!
ReplyDeleteI always love everything you do but I think I like the table without the skirt....also like the large baskets idea for underneath. The skirt is pretty but like the commenter above I think it looks cleaner without the skirt.
Judy
Definitely without the skirt. The table has great shape and good legs and the unadorned lines fit the space well.
ReplyDeleteIt looks light gray in my photos and I think the colour is beautiful. I wouldn't add the script either...might make it a bit too trendy, I'd just let the paint-finish weather and soften a bit and I think you'll have something you can love for a long time.
Well done!
Lord have mercy, you've been busy and your place looks gorgeous! I love your table! Without the skirt, looks more spacious. Big baskets or bench underneath would give texture. My favorites are Monique, the white distressed mirror piece, the coffee table, the chandy, the rug, the chair with & sign, the 19 basket....
ReplyDeleteI just love this room!
Blessings

You've been a busy girl! I love the transformation...these rooms feel so cozy and so well put together with the perfect touches. You sure know your style!
ReplyDeleteI personally like the curtain but I think it will look just as great without it. It softens the area and has a charm to it.
No to the script - I too, think it will end up looking trendy and busy looking. The table is so cool now that I wouldn't keep adding to it.
So that's my two cents! I love the lighter brighter look in here now and I still think the hall tree is the best part of the room - love it. :)
wow your room is stunning! i love everything about it and i love the skirt it add some softness & personality! i wouldn't change a thing! awesome job T, can you come help me? xo susan
ReplyDeleteI have the best readers in the world- thanks so much for your feedback thus far and keep your ideas coming!! I haven't completed/posted a project in so long I've lost some of my bravado I'm afraid.
ReplyDeletexo~

WOW!! It looks great!!!
ReplyDeleteThe table looks wonderful with and without fabric. It seems a shame to have the perfect piece of fabric and not use it, but I think I prefer it without. You really cant go wrong with whatever you choose. I LOVE that tiny little round side table, does it have a marble top? So cute!
Hi T - your DIY-ness amazes me! what wonderful changes you have made overall to your house. i wish i had one ounce of your ability to tackle these projects yourself. WAY TO GO!!
ReplyDeletei actually prefer the skirt and no writing on the table. the writing has a graphic feel to it, and it seems like it would be too busy in that space. i like the skirt to soften up the area...lots of other things with legs happening there too. its all so fabulous and im extremely jealous!
talk soon - Jenny
Love what you have done! Love the skirt! Wouldn't change that table a bit! Beautiful!!! Your whole room looks amazing! I have the rugs you have too! Love the texture they add!
ReplyDeleteWow, what a fantastic transformation!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your home. It has so many great details and really feels like a family home!
Oh, and your bookshelves are just the way I would want mine to look like. A mix of books and beautiful decorative accents.
Amazing!!!
Ditch the skirt fabric. The table has clean lines and should be appreciated for it's own style. I do think that 2 cube benches underneath would look great. i have seen those in wicker from Target...worth a look.
ReplyDeleteForget the script...it's trendy!
I love the skirt!!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and have always been a lurker but had to comment today - your before & after is really stunning! Love the refurbished table, it fits in perfectly, I like the contrast of the clean lines without the skirt. Thanks for all of your inspiration!
ReplyDeleteWell aren't we a split bunch...the room looks GORGEOUS! What a difference from before. I ADORE the skirt on the table. Wouldn't change a thing!!
ReplyDeleteT - this is such an amazing fabulous transformation!!!!
ReplyDeleteI just love the palette - and like Tara said above - I second it all! I am totally torn with fabric vs. not. I'm a fabric girl at heart - but then again I love baskets, too. I think the bottom line - there isn't a wrong answer!
LOVE your vision, love your execution - love your creative mind!
can't wait to see what you do.
xoxo
WOW - I could just look forever...You are one amazing girl! I love what you did with the table. I have no decorator genes so I am not going to give advice but I could make myself right at home here...
ReplyDeleteI would just die for a script table though..might just give it a go...betcha you could do a pretty darn good job:)
Love the skirt as is... don't change it.. why?? it's great!
ReplyDeleteI'm all about what is unexpected.
ReplyDeleteA skirt on a table like that-love it-unexpected. (You can always take it off if it bothers you, then throw it back on when you want to dazzle someone.)
Writing on the table-predictable. I feel like that has been done several times. I like it how it is.
Love the "new" room.
-Meg, a new follower.
Wow! What an amazing transformation! I am so inspired - I can't tell you how fabulous this looks!
ReplyDeletePlease, Please KEEP THE SKIRT! It looks so good - I was thinking to myself - how did she think of that! I love, love the table/skirt color combo - so chic!
The skirt is so unexpected - I love it. I think baskets and ottomans are more commonplace. I should know - that's what I have but, this is fantastic - Seriously, I love it - can you tell!
I would not put the script on the table - it's perfection as is!
Great job with the whole room - you should be so so proud of your accomplishment!
AB
I love it with the skirt, it makes it look like a special piece instead of a regular console. But if you choose to do without it would be another great space to decorate. My fav is with.
ReplyDeleteI think you should use the skirt seasonally, because I like the table both ways. Great job on the paint treatment! Looks very french...
ReplyDeleteI love it just as is- perfecto! All your changes are divine.
ReplyDeletehi t,
ReplyDeletei can't believe what a transformation! esp from the beginning with the gold to all the white. beautiful. i like the table with the skirt, it's unexpected and i like that. BUT i also think baskets below would look amazing too. good job girlie.
xo
janet
I love everything! It looks like you had a ton of fun and most of all, this space looks like YOU! It's full of heart!
ReplyDeletePersonally, I love the table as is...with the skirt and in that fabric. It just seems more "you" (and also steps that table up a notch). The seagrass gives you the texture, so you don't need baskets for that. But do get yourself a few baskets to use behind the skirt for hidden storage!
Also love the placement of the lamp you bought from my Warrenton loot! Looks awesome with your stuff!
Dying to know what hubby thinks!
Xo,
Lins
I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help in answering your table question. The way you redid it with the fabric is absolutely charming. I may go with a burlap or tan like you mentioned, but otherwise, it is soooo cute. I also like it without the fabric beneath ... it gives two different looks. (see what I mean?)
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time visiting, and I really like what you have done with your house. Keep up the great work!!
Your transformation is amazing. I really like the white furniture against your dark paint. I'm going to check out your cleaning post, I'm really feeling the need to weed out stuff around here. Blessings, Kim
ReplyDeleteSo creative. I like the table as she is, no skirt. The chunky legs, the color, everything else is such a statement. Maybe add some deep tall baskets underneath for storage if you need to.
ReplyDeleteSomeone commented to use the skirt seasonally and that's my opinion too because it looks great both ways. Use the skirt in the winter when you could use some extra warmth and put it away during the summer when cooler cleaner lines are more the thing. And it is not too blue.
ReplyDeleteAs to the lettering, would those stencils they make for walls work on your table? If so, you wouldn't have to worry about your handwriting.
I'd probably go skirtless. I think if you leave the skirt on, you're in danger of making the room too "feminine." It's nice to have a balance of soft and rough in a room. Plus, extra seating would be great for your parties! I like the ides of the script. Maybe places you've traveled to? If you go that route, I'd sand it down and paint over-or maybe you could just use permanent marker? Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI like skirtless~ it's got an interesting, almost "ancient artifact" look to it, without the skirt!
ReplyDeleteLove the changes you've made~
Holy cow is that table cool!!! The whole room looks AWESOME!!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteHugs ~
:) T
what a fantastic space you have created!!
ReplyDeletelove all the colors and textures you have chosen
wow!
Looks great! I like the table w/o the skirt and maybe a big basket underneath. Your house has such charm!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog from MMS....Loving what I see!
ReplyDeleteFantastic revamp of the table! I love it with the skirt as it softens the hard edges. Nice that it is removeable though for when you want a different look!
Wow - opinions are all over the place! I think the skirt is the crowning glory!
ReplyDeleteObviously the "T" stands for terrific, or tremendous?!! Truly a wonderful transformation. You certainly got your inspiration going and accomplished greatness.
ReplyDeleteMay you relax and enjoy your fabulous sunroom this weekend. The sun is out!!
X Deb
I have recently found your blog and was excited since I live in the area. I think I like it with the skirt...it continues the softness of the little slips on the chairs. Baskets would be pretty but the skirt gives your eye a place to rest and enjoy. Great energy to get all that done, wish I had a little.
ReplyDeleteI am your newest follower =) I just love a blog I go to and everwhere I look is eye candy. I almost stopped breathing when I saw the Mora clock!
ReplyDeleteI would be so delighted if you would link this up to my VIP party @ http://designergarden.blogspot.com/2011/01/vip-party-1.html
Wow what a transformation...love the creativity and character in your place! Great textures and colors. You are a natural! ;-)
ReplyDeleteHave a happy weekend!
~michelle~
If you keep the skirt, purchase new fabric. You can splurge, as it win't take much.
ReplyDeleteWith the skirt, fill in with 2 large baskets for storage.
Dee
What a fabulous transformation, T, and what a beautiful room! Love the table, and the skirt looks great... I think it should be a keeper!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend to you!
xoxo,
Jo :)
You're house is gorgeous! I like the table with the skirt :0)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous...wouldn't change a thing about the table or the skirt. Love your blog and am your newest follower!
ReplyDeleteI love how you think
ReplyDeletethings through and
don't jump into filling
your spaces just for the
sake of having them filled.
Personally, I really like
the table with the skirt.
In fact, it might be fun
to have it that way in the
winter {looks cozier} and
then put it away and add
the little benches for the
summer. I love how the
table looks almost like
cement or stone ~ very cool!
Happy Saturday, T!
xx Suzanne
I think the table turned out great! and I like the skirt just the way it is! The whole room looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteTheresa
aka:tot
Oh, so many questions! I'd just 'live with it' for a while. Personally, I think it's darling. Don't you love playing around with joint compound? I trowel tinted jc onto hanging canvases sometimes, then paint a mural over it. It looks a bit like a fresco. So much fun!
ReplyDeleteWould love for you to drop by and link up to Passion for Paint this weekend.
http://MuralMaker1.blogspot.com
What an awesome transformation! It all looks so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh my!!! Everything is so pretty! The table is amazing, who would have thought joint compound, great idea! I love the idea of script, could you transfer it somehow? Or use a projection screen...don't know, just thinking while typing.
ReplyDeleteOK I'm a little envious of your "little" wine storage area. Let me know if you need some help drinking it :)
Have a fabulous Sunday!
XO
Just found your blog and I love the skirt! You did a beautiful job on that table! If it were me, I'd leave it and be happy with a job well done :) ~Christie
ReplyDeleteWhat a big transformation! The refurbished table looks very nice and lovely! Great job on that.
ReplyDeleteWow..hello! Just found your blog...your home is beautiful and what a transformation! The table looks stunning! Like metal plate...I like the skirt as it softens the look but without it looks more contemporary I think..so maybe you can have both, depending on how you feel at the time!
ReplyDeleteWill now be a new follower ;)
thanks for sharing..very inspirational!
ciao bella!
jessie, nelson, new zealand
Oh, wow that table is great!!! I prefer it without the fabric and would love to see it with an italian script! By the way, if you need help translating something you like into italian, I will be happy to help you!
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Mara
Just catching up on your blog T - I love the table! Not that I'm that much of a designer but I would personally go skirtless and I love that it's a bit bluish/gray. I think white would blend too much with the bookshelves...The italian script is a cool idea! Rob can help you with that if you need:) I also like it as is without script. The room looks awesome T!
ReplyDeleteT2
I like the table both ways, so I agree that it'd be fun to use the skirt for winter, and remove it for summer. To the person who said you should change the fabric, I don't agree. Looks great with that fabric; if it were too posh or fancy or eye-catching, it would lose its charm. The stripe is unassuming and fits in well.
ReplyDeleteTotally wish I could just do a makeover of my own living room, but alas, I lack ideas and I tend to get too sentimental with my stuff, and it's hard to imagine how to mix my antiques with new decor. Your pics are inspiring though. :)
Beautiful room. Love all of the details. No expert here, but I personally like the skirt. It was actually one of the first things to catch my attention. I also love that you incorporated your grandparents stool. So sweet and sentimental. I love it!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you.
I love the fresh new look! The table looks great both ways, but I like the table better without the skirt, as there is already some softness with the burlap chair and pillows next to it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful space! Personally, I love the skirt! I think it warms up the space so much...plus, it's sort of unexpected. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I have seen your blog, it is great. I love the whole look of your room. You have achieved a warm and inviting space. I think the table is amazing, it looks exactly like a concrete table, but for a tenth of the price. What a fabulous idea!! I think that both the fabric and no fabric looks equally fabulous, but you should probably consider the use of the room. If you have a lot of company and not enough chairs, then your idea of the benched would be great. Or if you need more storage and have amazing baskets then ditch the curtain and use the baskets. If you don't have great baskets and want to cover ugly bins and things then keep the curtain, but anyway you go you it will look amazing with the table!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou did an amazing job with that table T!! I really love seeing your home transform. I was totally loving the curtain with the table until I saw it without...now I like it better that way.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
xo
I TOTALLY WANT YOUR HOUSE!!! Awesome! Love everything about the room - can't go wrong with or without the skirt... no script...sit back girl, with a nice glass of vino and bask in the beauty of this room!!
ReplyDeletenewbie blogger and new here - come see me ;)
http://paintedfresh.blogspot.com
What a fabulous style you have! It all looks so lovely with or with out skirt! I think no script too as if, you are like me, by the time I would get the script on it it would be out of style. All that work isn't worth the cuteness for the day though I do like the look,.
ReplyDeletebee blessed
mary
I still thin it looks totally amazing! You have such a great eye and creative talent!!!! Thanks for linking T! :)
ReplyDeleteYour home looks great! I did a similar purge this summer, cleaned out a shed, and had 5 truckfuls leave. Oh my, what a wonderful feeling!
ReplyDeleteThe table is fabulous..as is the entire room. The wine bottle with corks looks wonderful on the table.
ReplyDeletexo,
Sherry
i love it with the skirt!
ReplyDeleteI love how pulled together the room looks. I prefer the table with the skirt rather than without it. If you're worried about your script, try it on something smaller - or barter!
ReplyDeleteGreat job.
Definately KEEP the skirt, it gives it all a soft very French look. Be daring paint on the script, you can always repaint over it if you don't like it.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't been much help have we! I am liking the table without the skirt-for extra storage, how about the grey wicker baskets from ikea? With cushions, they could also double as extra seating.
ReplyDeleteWith the skirt. Looks unfinished without. Funny enough, I'm more of a basket girl myself!
ReplyDeleteLove all the textures in your room! And I like the skirt, I think it adds softness in the window area where you have shutters instead of drapes (I love shutters too).
ReplyDelete:)Heidi
I have been back to this post so many times as your "before" reminds me of my dark living room which is taking me forever to transform. I have black leather furniture which is comfy and holds up forever, but it is so dark! I also have mid-toned wood floors and doors so I it's nice to see lightening up a room can be done with dark wood flooring as well! Thank you for the fabulous inspiration. I vote for skirtless and love Nita's idea of baskets underneath. I love the rugs--where are they from?
ReplyDelete
