☺ ** My budget friendly kitchen renovation is completed.** ☺
It's amazing how much brighter my little kitchen is now with the white bead board, white farm sink and far less clutter lurking about!
The bad news is that now my floors stand out like crazy. Nothing a small sea grass rug (already had) and a little grout trick (at bottom of post) can't mask.
You can see the before in the middle with the cluttered bakers rack and laminate counter tops and back splash. The tan laminate counters and back splash always gave my kitchen a yellowish hue, although you can't really tell in that photo.
This is the view when I walk into the kitchen from the upstairs landing in the morning.
A before and after side by side below. The photo on the left was taken in 2010 with the dark stained island and too much counter and top-o-the-fridge junk, eek!
The view while standing in the kitchen, looking into the dining room on the front of the house. The kitchen feels so much more open with the bakers rack and the wood island out of there. Since we're lacking in counter space I feel like I need this center island and having the open bottom does lend to a bit more airy feel.
This is a good before and after shot. Lighter paint and less clutter in the kitchen and you can see the a hint of the shift in the dining room over the past 4 years as well.
I just adore this sink. It's the single bowl Domsjo (sources at bottom of post) but it feels huge to me and definitely works in our little space. I didn't want the clutter of the extra spray nozzle at the sink so we opted for a single hole, pull down sprayer faucet.

A scary and embarassing before and after of the sink and surrounding clutter:
I removed the fold down leaves in my old kitchen island cart and it fits perfectly in between the powder bath and my sun room entrance. Again, because space is an issue I opted to keep it for now {storage!}. This forced me to move the ozarka water tank, the big stainless trash can and the dog bowls into the sun room which is a better trade off visually.
I gave the walls a fresh coat of the leftover Fieldstone (Benjamin Moore) from my living room update last year. It's a bit lighter than the gray that I painted in here back in 2008 and flows much better while looking into the kitchen from the living room.
Looking to the back of the house into the sun room with the powder bath on the right and the stair landing to the left.
Some close up shots below.
Yummy hand soap and lotion from our recent trip to Napa Valley (the Girl and the Fig in Sonoma).
This old kitchen cart has been out in my garage for the past 4 years. Nothing like a can of rustoleum primer/sealant and silver metallic paint to make her as good as new.
The stove side progression from 4 years ago to today.
Some 'faux' white grout was used to freshen the yucky laminate floor tiles that we placed in a hurried pre move-in state back in 2008 (HAD to cover the avocado green tiles). You can see in the photo above by masking the gray lines it does freshen the floors a bit. I found this white sharpie paint pen (oil based) at Michael's.
A tip to fix those nasty yellowed handles on your dated-but-in-perfect-working-condition-fridge: simply remove the handles and use spray paint for plastic. I'd tried everything over the years, goo gone, bleach etc and it just made them yellow further. It was easy to remove the handles and give them a fresh coat of white.

We still need have the countertop/backsplash edges caulked and sealed but that's about it.
Now I just have to quit nesting and labeling everything in my newly organized and purged kitchen and get back to cooking and taking care of my family! ♥

PS~ A huge thanks to this amazing friend for all of her help this weekend. She sat on my dirty kitchen floor, paint pen in hand, then she moved on to hanging some of the wall decor and setting up the counter top stuff. THEN she proceeded to de-clutter my entire downstairs by loading up my dining room table with accessories and knick knacks to be packed away and rotated in/out. So not only is my kitchen new and fresh, my dining room, living room and sun room are in tip top shape. Love you La!!

wha ta lovely mini transformation. I have bead board as a back splash in our guest house and absolutely love it. So easy to clean too!
ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing!!!!! Very warm, friendly and welcoming. Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks GOOD!

Looks absolutely amazing!!! I cant beleive how open and spacious your kitchen looks now! WOW! :D I love your decor choices! :)
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Super fun! I'm recognizing those bread boards! I've got mine behind my kitchen sink as a backsplash so that I don't trash my walls. Also playing around with leaving them out in the rain and sun a bit to "age" them...but at risk of warping them! Your home owner should be SO PROUD! I'd have you as a renter any day! The things you have done there are AMAZING!!! xoxo!
ReplyDeleteLovely and inspiring transformation!! (And thanks for sharing some great tips.)
ReplyDelete'Ola, just found you via A Country Farmhouse, really liking the cart, have the same problem with the one I'm using making the kitchen feel too heavy. Good idea, think I'll steal, is that alright? haha...

what a precious perfect thing to see first thing in the morning!
ReplyDeleteLove it. So close to what I am doing. Are you happy with the countertops? I chose the oak color. And plan to use leftover breadboard for my backsplash as well. I am thrilled to see how well yours turned out. Congrats!
ReplyDeleteSummersoul- we are loving the wood countertops! I used two coats of the Behandla oil from Ikea. Water marks from glasses just wipe right off. So far, so good but I will make sure to oil every few weeks just to be safe.
ReplyDeleteCindy Sue~ thanks for visiting and yes, I just added the follow by email link on the left sidebar (top).
ReplyDeleteThank you.
THANKS A BUNCHES! just added my email to subscribe!

Oh such a lovely kitchen...you will get soooooooooo much pleasure from it!!! Love it!
ReplyDeleteLovely kitchen transformation! One more thing: had you considerd putting the same wood you used on the countertops on your island? It might lighten the look of your kitchen even more. Just a thought...;-)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh, T!!!!! It looks fabulous and I knew it would! Really makes me wanna get on my kitchen update, even if it's just minor changes. Great job!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Anon 11:32, yes, I am planning to ask our handyman (he did the install for us) to cut a piece of the leftover butcher block for the kitchen cart. The black slate-type top is already driving me mad, too hard to wipe up and marks easily.
ReplyDeleteThank you!

It looks great!
ReplyDeleteAnd I am in LOVE with your sink!!!
Absolutely wonderful Tricia! So bright and airy...I'd never want to leave! I love how it's not only beautiful, but it's obviously very funtional too, you're going to have so much fun in there!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy...

Maintaining the white cabinets renovation after renovation, for me, is great. It is the kitchen’s statement piece, I must say. Plus, a cooking space dominated by white feels more relaxing to work in. I also noticed you have a cute chopping board. Oink! :D

Love your kitchen Tricia! It really looks amazing. The counter tops are great aren't they...
ReplyDeleteSo glad you've got it done to enjoy.
It's a good thing that you renovate your bathroom every 2 years. We can consider that place the heart and soul of a mother, a professional chef, or both. This is the place wherein you spend most of your time chatting with the family; it only deserves to be in good condition. I salute you for that!
ReplyDeleteRenovating a kitchen every two years is not a bad idea, but it’s best to stick with accessories that can last for years and those that can serve its true purpose. Say, a well-functioning microwave oven or coffee maker shouldn’t be replaced for as long as it is doing the right job. Focusing on the kitchen’s color, ventilation, space is much better.
ReplyDeleteNice! You have great taste & have inspired me to kick things into gear at my house! I have to say, my favorites are the wall color and white cabinets with the beadboard backsplash... it completes the look! I look forward to reading your blogs!
ReplyDeleteI'm awestruck by the transformation of your kitchen. That's what to expect from a mother like you, girl. Who conceptualized all this? If it's you, then I congratulate you for coming up such a wonderful concept. Not to mention, the plates on the wall - they are certain a match with the animal skull above it.
ReplyDeleteWow, that was a smooth transition from 2008 to 2012! :) Good job! Less clutter, and toning down the color would indeed do the trick. Minimalism makes you feel more relaxed with visual clutter. It would also prevent you from buying unnecessary house accessories or furniture.

Your entire house is adorable!

Your kitchen is the closest to my own that I've seen online, and I've been looking! I'm very interested about how your countertops are holding up, especially next to the sink. And are you still happy with your sink? I'm *this close to pulling the trigger on a kitchen spruce-up, and specifically searched the internet for Domsjo Single Sink With Wood Countertop. It looks great, to me!
